Disposal of Hazardous Waste in Underground Mines By V. Popov, R. Pusch
Disposal of Hazardous Waste in Underground Mines By V. Popov, R. Pusch
This book contains the results of a three-year research programme by a joint team of experts from four different EU countries. The main focus of this research was on investigating the possibility of using abandoned underground mines for the disposal of hazardous chemical waste with negligible pollution of the environment. The research work was focused on: the possibility of using abandoned underground mines for disposal of hazardous chemical waste with negligible pollution of the environment; the properties and behaviour of waste-isolating clay materials and practical ways of preparing and applying them; development of software tools to assess the stability, performance and risks associated with different repository concepts, considering the long-term safety of the biosphere; the isolating capacity of reference repositories; the different approaches for handling hazardous chemical waste.

Advanced Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment: A Road to Safer Society and Environment

Petr Hlavinek, Igor Winkler, Jiri Marsalek and Ivana Mahrikova, "Advanced Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment: A Road to Safer Society and Environment"
S,,nger | 2011 | ISBN: 9400703090 | 372 pages | PDF | 11,2 MB

Stable, safe, secure and readily available water supply is one of the key factors in ensuring a good level of the public health and a stable society. Scientific assessments show that about 80 % of diseases and one-third of the total death toll in the developing countries are caused by the low quality of the drinking water. Other countries are also suffering from water shortages and insufficient quality of the drinking water. Many rivers in Europe and in other parts of the world are significantly polluted by insufficiently treated or untreated wastewater discharge.

This book is based on the discussions and papers prepared for the NATO Advanced Research Workshop that took place in Lviv, Ukraine, and addressed recent advances in water supply and wastewater treatment as a prerequisite for a safer society and environment. The contributions critically assess the existing knowledge on urban water management and provide an overview of the current water management issues, especially in the countries in transition in Central and Eastern Europe and in the Mediterranean Dialogue countries.

Contaminated Soils, Sediments and Water Volume 10: Successes and Challenges

Edward J. Calabrese, Paul T. Kostecki, James Dragun, "Contaminated Soils, Sediments and Water Volume 10: Successes and Challenges"
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387283226 | edition 2005 | PDF | 508 pages | 30.3 mb

This volume contains articles from the 20th Annual International Conference on Soils, Sediments and Water. Primarily a technical conference, each year the platform sessions, poster presentations, and workshops represent the leading edge in environmental science and technology. The meeting promotes a collaboarative approach between scientists, engineers, environmental consultants, industry, and regulators dealing with environmental contamination.

This yearly conference began 21 years ago to inform the environmental remediation efforts of the DEP and the EPA. What started as a group of Academics providing informal assistance to the EPA is now an international conference that presents current research with the support of a high level scientific advisory board. The conference follows trends and adapts the conference agenda accordingly. The largest ever attendance at the 2004 meeting was at nearly 1000 due to the caliber of the researchers and engineers presenting at the conference. Content is especially relevant to environmental remediation professionals for acquiring current knowledge and technologies that can be immediately applied in the field.

Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurement

Dwayne Heard, "Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurement"
Wil y-Bl ckw ll | 2006 | ISBN-10: 1405123575 | 528 pages | PDF | 5,6 MB

Almost all of the breakthroughs in understanding the atmosphere have been initiated by field observations, using a range of instrumental techniques. Developing or deploying instruments to make further observations demands a thorough understanding of the chemical and spectroscopic principles on which such measurements depend.
Written as an authoritative guide to the techniques of instrumental measurement for the atmospheric scientist, research student or undergraduate, Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurement focuses on the instruments used to make real time measurements of atmospheric gas and aerosol composition. Topics covered include how they work, their strengths and weaknesses for a particular task, the platforms on which they have been deployed and how they are calibrated. It explains the fundamental principles upon which the instrumental techniques are based (ie what property of a molecule can be exploited to enable its detection), what limits instrumental sensitivity and accuracy, and the information that can be gained from their use..

Design High-Performance Alternative Energy Systems for Buildings

A comprehensive reference for architects and engineers, this GreenSource book provides practical design and installation guidelines for some of the most commercially viable alternative energy technologies. Construction materials, system deployment, typical installations, and environmental impact are covered.

Alternative Energy Systems in Building Design includes information on LEED design, energy conservation, and solar power financing and return on investment. Power purchase agreements (PPAs) and national and international carbon cap and trade are also discussed. Valuable appendices contain detailed design data tables and certified equipment listings.

Alternative Energy Systems in Building Design covers:

# Solar power system physics and technologies
# California solar initiative program
# Energy conservation
# Passive heating solar technologies
# Fuel cell technology
# Wind energy technologies
# Ocean energy technologies
# Hydroelectric and micro-hydro turbine power
# Geothermal energy
# Biofuel, biogas, and thermal depolymerization technologies
# Fission- and fusion-type nuclear power
# Air pollution abatement
