Democracy's Good Name: The Rise and Risks of the World's Most Popular Form of Government

Democracy's Good Name: The Rise and Risks of the World's Most Popular Form of Government By Michael Mandelbaum

Publisher: PublicAffairs 2007 | 336 Pages | ISBN: 1586485148 | PDF | 1 MB

The last thirty years have witnessed a remarkably rapid rise of democracies around the world. In 1975, only thirty countries were democracies. Today, 119 of the world’s 190 countries are democratic. How did democracy establish itself so quickly and so widely? Why do some important countries and regions remain undemocratic?

In Democracy’s Good Name, Michael Mandelbaum, one of America’s leading foreign policy thinkers, answers these questions. He discusses the relationship between democracy, on the one hand, and war and terrorism, on the other, and assesses the prospects for the establishment of democracy in Russia, China, and the Arab world. And he explains why the United States has found it so difficult to foster democratic governments in other countries.

Pharmacology for the Health Care Professions

Pharmacology for the Health Care Professions is an accessible introduction to the pharmacology necessary for health care professionals training to be non-medical prescribers looking for an overview of the subject. The book covers the pharmacology necessary for accredited training programmes in non-medical prescribing and certification in access and supply of prescription-only medicines and will be useful as an ongoing reference for future use in practice.

Opening with a general introduction to pharmacology as a science, the book goes on to explain what is meant by drugs and medicines and why pharmacology should be of relevance to health care professionals. The reader is presented with general principles of pharmacology followed by systemic pharmacology that covers the actions of important groups of drugs in common use to treat diseases and conditions of the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, musculoskeletal, skin and central nervous systems. The physiology and pathophysiology relevant to the understanding of how these drugs work is included.

Finally the book explores the law in relation to the sale, supply, administration and prescription of drugs and explains what is meant by non-medical prescribing. All aspects of non-medical prescribing are considered including the use of exemptions to the Medicines Act, patient group directions, supplementary prescribing and the development of independent prescribing for nurses and pharmacists.

Pharmacology is explained in simple, easy to understand terms and the book avoids any unnecessary chemistry where possible. Case studies that are of particular relevance to health care professionals are used throughout to illustrate the importance of the pharmacology major body systems and pathologies and the potential problems of adverse drug reactions and drug-drug interactions.

Life Saving Drugs: The Elusive Magic Bullet

In 1900 only a handful of drugs (morphine, quinine, aspirin etc) had genuine efficacy and recovery from infections was haphazard. Now there are literally thousands of drugs and life-threatening infections have been either overcome or much diminished.
Life-saving Drugs: the Elusive Magic Bullet describes the discovery and development of antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-cancer drugs. The book highlights the colourful characters behind the inventions and the huge improvements in quality of life and life-expectancy that these drugs have produced.

Emphasis is given to the new drugs that have emerged as a result of knowledge of the human genome, and the ways in which the newer drugs are being designed to tackle disease, particularly cancer, at the genetic level. Chemical structures are provided for all of the key drugs and the book is well illustrated.

Life-saving Drugs: the Elusive Magic Bullet can be read as a history of drug development during the past 100 years by those with only a passing knowledge of chemistry. For anyone entering the medical profession, pharmacy, or nursing, it will provide a superb basic knowledge of all drugs they are ever likely to meet, including their modes of action. For the chemist or medicinal chemist, it will provide the fundamental knowledge of life-saving drugs that they all should know. And for the non-scientist who wants to know about 'super-bugs', SARS, Ebola, and all of the wonderful advances in treating cancer, it is illuminating and easy to read.

Surgical Techniques -Textbook for medical students

Surgical Techniques -Textbook for medical students
Medicina Könyvkiadó Rt. | 2006 | ISBN: 9634827853 | 120 pages | PDF | 6 MB

“Surgical techniques” is a subject relating to the principles of surgery. Traditionally it discusses instrumentation, tools and sterile techniques used to perform safe operations by generations of surgeons. A relatively new, but continuously expanding element is linked to the development of clinical surgery. This part involves surgical research on the pathophysiology of the perioperative period, and scientific studies on the consequences of invasive procedures on the body functions and on the relationship of surgery and patient care in general. These aspects are of utmost importance for the achievement of good surgical results. In brief, “surgical techniques” is concerned with the methodology of classical surgery, and may also be regarded as the deontology of modern surgery (deontology = theory of obligations). This handbook is based on the topics presented on the graduate courses at the Institute of Surgical Research at the University of Szeged. These courses do not cover all aspects of clinical surgery; the intention is rather to give a general overview of basic techniques which could be used in practice in all major fields and subspecialties. There are a number of conventional surgical techniques that have been in use for some time and the scalpel is the symbolic instrument of these fields. However, it is being replaced by new and more effective surgical tools, sophisticated computer technology and techniques such as laser, robotic or minimally invasive surgery. If we wish to be at the forefront of these advances, the new methods should also be discussed.

Core Topics in Thoracic Anesthesia

Core Topics in Thoracic Anesthesia
Cambridge University Press | 2009-04-27 | ISBN: 0521867126 | 230 pages | PDF | 6 MB

Providing an easily readable source of information about the current spectrum of anesthesia and critical care management of patients undergoing thoracic surgery, this book forms part of the successful Core Topics brand. The book provides practical assistance to those commencing careers in thoracic anesthesia and will also to be a useful aide-memoire to those already working in the field. The comprehensive content includes discussion of some of the more contentious issues in the management of thoracic patients as well as giving a flavour of the rapid evolution of new techniques that are of increasing importance in the field, such as lung-assist devices, different modes of ventilation and VAT surgery. Both editors are practising cardiothoracic anesthetists/intensivists at an internationally recognized centre for thoracic surgery, particularly lung transplantation. The contributors are chosen for their clinical expertise and to give a spectrum of opinion across the range of thoracic anesthesia.

Java for Bioinformatics and Biomedical Applications

Java for Bioinformatics and Biomedical Applications
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387372350 | edition 2006 | PDF | 342 pages | 16,5 mb

The science and practice of medicine has undergone a fundamental change as a result of large-scale genome projects that led to the sequencing of a number of important microbial, plant and animal genomes in the last 5 years. This book aims to combine industry standard software engineering and design principles, genomics and bioinformatics and cancer research. It focuses on creating and integrating practical, useful tools for the scientific community in the context of real-life, real-value biomedical problems that researchers face on a routine basis, rather than being just a didactic exercise in learning a programming platform. The book leverages technologies for molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics and cancer research developed by the NIH, NCI-Center for Bioinformatics (NCICB), the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI, a division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the NIH) and Stanford University.

Clinical Approach to Sudden Cardiac Death Syndromes

Josep Brugada, Pedro Brugada, Ramon Brugada "Clinical Approach to Sudden Cardiac Death Syndromes"
Springer | English | 2009-12-21 | ISBN: 1848829264 | 340 pages | PDF | 11,3 MB

Clinical cardiologists are encountering an important challenge in the caring of families with inherited cardiac diseases. The majority of the inherited cardiac diseases causing sudden death express themselves at variable ages in the form of altered muscle function (i.e hypertrophic or dilated cardiomyopathy) or in the form of arrhythmias (i.e. Brugada syndrome, long QT syndrome). However, it is not uncommon that the first sign of the disease may actually be sudden cardiac death, even before the identification of clear clinical abnormalities. In this last decade, with more than 50 new disease-associated genes identified, the possibility of genetic testing has opened a new opportunity to disease diagnosis and prevention. Clinical and genetic research is continuously on-going not only to identify those at risk, but to better define their level or risk still with limited success.
