Diabetes and You: A Comprehensive, Holistic Approach

Naheed Ali, "Diabetes and You: A Comprehensive, Holistic Approach"
Ro man & Little eld P lishers | 2011 | ISBN: 1442207280 | 240 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

From Booklist
In this well-organized guidebook, physician Ali gives diabetics and their families understandable information about an increasingly common and ultimately debilitating disease. More than 23 million people suffer from diabetes in the U.S. alone. Ali expertly covers the causes, treatment, and early and later symptoms. (The first signs are excessive thirst, urination, and appetite. Later, people can suffer from erectile dysfunction, acne, headaches, and cramps.) Ali also explains the disease’s mind-boggling alphabet-acronym soup: BMI, SMBG, DCCT, NP, DKA. Rather than blaming type 2 diabetics for sufferers’ condition, which is often brought on by obesity, Ali tries to motivate them to exercise and lose weight. He also includes a thorough glossary (whoever heard of Goodpasture’s syndrome?) and several pages with contact information for research groups, diabetes centers and clinics, and other resources. His advice isn’t always earthshaking; learn portion size, keep a food diary, eat more fruits and vegetables, quit smoking. But it may be lifesaving. --Karen Springen

The identification and characterization of these anti-angiogenic molecules opens a new avenue for the research and production of functional and medicinal foods with far reaching implications for the food-based treatment of chronic degenerative disease.

PACS and Digital Medicine: Essential Principles and Modern Practice

Yu Liu, "PACS and Digital Medicine: Essential Principles and Modern Practice"
Publisher: CRC Press | 2010 | ISBN: 1420083651 | PDF | 367 pages | 15.4 MB

To improve efficiency and reduce administrative costs, healthcare providers, insurance companies, and governments are increasingly using integrated electronic health record (EHR) and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) to manage patients’ medical information. Reflecting the latest applications of PACS technology, PACS and Digital Medicine: Essential Principles and Modern Practice discusses the essential principles of PACS, EHR, and related technological advancements as well as practical issues concerning the implementation, operation, and maintenance of PACS and EHR systems.

The book focuses on various components of PACS that use state-of-the-art technologies. The authors first present topics to consider prior to implementation, including design principles for PACS components and theory. They also cover post-installation quality control; security and privacy policies; maintenance, including upgrade/integration with other information systems; and governing standards. Each chapter includes an introduction to basic concepts and principles relevant to the topics, before exploring challenges that PACS users may encounter in daily work. Discussions are supplemented with more than 130 illustrations, along with case studies of implementation in two organizations.

A useful guide and broad overview of the field, this book presents key principles and practical steps for PACS and EHR implementations and maintenance. Although the technology and standards of healthcare IT will evolve over time, the theory and practical advice found in this text will remain pertinent in the future.

Let's face it. If you looked and felt your best, you wouldn't be reading this.
Maybe you packed weight on over the last 20 years... maybe it's all new weight. It doesn't matter. Either way, you hate what you see when you look at yourself in the mirror... or worse, you don't even look in mirrors anymore. You try the latest fad diets only to end up losing and regaining the same 10 pounds (and then some) over and over again. You're left starved... feeling depressed... and even heavier than when you started. You buy all the worthless home gym equipment and all you lose is the £50... £100... or even £1,000 you spent.
If those diet schemes and exercise machines actually worked, you'd already have that body of your dreams. But they don't... and you don't.

Metabolism. There isn’t perhaps a more frequently used word in the weight loss (and weight gain) vocabulary than this. Indeed, it’s not uncommon to overhear people talking about their struggles, or triumphs, over the holiday bulge or love handles in terms of whether their metabolism is working, or not.

Doctors, too, often refer to metabolism when they try and explain why starvation and water-loss diets aren’t scientifically of medically responsible; since, alas, they do not influence or take into account metabolism (there’s that word again!). So, for all of the usage that this rather daunting and biologically- charged word enjoys in our world, you’d comfortably assume that people understand it, right? Or, at least, they have some fundamental information when it comes to how to speed up their metabolism, right? Wrong!
