The Making of Salem: The Witch Trials in History, Fiction and Tourism

Robin Derosa, "The Making of Salem: The Witch Trials in History, Fiction and Tourism"
Publisher: M cFarl an d | 2009 | ISBN: 0786439831 | PDF | 216 pages | 1.1 MB

The Salem Witch Trials of 1692 are a case study in hysteria and group psychology, and the cultural effects still linger centuries later. This critical study examines original trial transcripts, historical accounts, fiction and drama, film and television shows, and tourist sites in contemporary Salem, challenging the process of how history is collected and recorded. Drawing from literary and historical theory, as well as from performance studies, the book offers a new definition of history and uses Salem as a tool for rethinking the relationships between the truth and the stories people tell about the past.

Did God Have A Wife? Archaeology And Folk Religion In Ancient Israel

William G. Dever, "Did God Have A Wife? Archaeology And Folk Religion In Ancient Israel"
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company | 2005 | ISBN: 0802828523 | PDF | 344 pages | 12.9 MB

Following up on his two recent, widely acclaimed studies of the history and social life of ancient Israel, William Dever here uses archaeological and biblical evidence to reconstruct the folk religion of ancient Israel. Did God Have a Wife? shines new light on the presence and influence of women's cults in early Israel and their implications for our understanding of the official "religion of the book." Dever pays particular attention to presences of the goddess Asherah, reviled by the authors of the Hebrew Bible as a foreign deity but considered by many modern scholars to have been popularly envisioned as the consort of biblical Yahweh.
The first book by an archaeologist on ancient Israelite religion, this fascinating study critically reviews virtually all of the archaeological literature of the past generation, and it brings fresh evidence to the table as well. While Dever digs deep into the past — revealing insights are found, for example, in the form of local and family shrines where sacrifices and other rituals were performed — his discussion is extensively illustrated and communicated in non-technical language accessible to everyone.
Dever calls his book "a feminist manifesto — by a man," and his work gives a new prominence to women as the custodians of Israel's folk religion. Though the monotheistic faith and practice recounted in the Bible likely held sway among educated, elite men in Jerusalem, the heart and soul of Israelite religion was polytheistic, concerned with meeting practical needs, and centered in the homes of common, illiterate people.

Even more popularly written than Dever's two previous books, Did God Have a Wife? is sure to spur wide, even passionate, debate in all quarters.

“Only when a human being experiences extended periods of joyfulness and blissfulness, will he stretch himself to the limits and do what he can to the fullest. When he’s in competition, he’s in fear of failure, he will only do a little better than somebody else. So, the human genius is completely missing today”.

Yogi, mystic and visionary, Sadhguru is a Spiritual Master with a difference. His life and work serve as a reminder that yoga is not an esoteric discipline from an outdated past, but a contemporary science, vitally relevant to our times.

A series of candid discussions with internationally acclaimed film director Shekhar Kapur, In Conversation with the Mystic offers Sadhguru’s incisive insights on a wide spectrum of subjects.

In ‘ Education – Blossoming of a Child’, Sadhguru talks about how competition is the driving force behind education today rather than being a means to enlarge the horizons of human perception. Knowledge is not a problem but being identified with something is hugely limiting. An adult needs to be as flexible as a child i

Optical amplifiers play a central role in all categories of fibre communications systems and networks. By compensating for the losses exerted by the transmission medium and the components through which the signals pass, they reduce the need for expensive and slow optical-electrical-optical conversion. The photonic gain media, which are normally based on glass- or semiconductor-based waveguides, can amplify many high speed wavelength division multiplexed channels simultaneously. Recent research has also concentrated on wavelength conversion, switching, demultiplexing in the time domain and other enhanced functions.

Sustainable Agricultural Development

Sustainable Agricultural Development

Sustainable Agricultural Development: Recent Approaches in Resources Management and Environmentally-Balanced Production Enhancement By Mohamed Behnassi, Shabbir A. Shahid, Joyce D'Silva
Publisher: S p r i n g e r 2011 | 318 Pages | ISBN: 9400705182 | PDF | 19 MB

Due to many challenges (i.e. climate change, energy, water and land shortage, high demands on food, land grabbing, etc.), agriculture production potential is expected to be seriously affected; thus, increasing food insecurity and hunger in many already affected regions (especially in Africa). In this context, sustainable agriculture is highly recommended as an eco-system approach where soil, water, plants, environment and living organisms live in harmony. Innovative technologies and research should be developed to ensure sustainable agriculture and productivity using modern irrigation systems, improved varieties, improved soil quality, etc. In the meantime, the preservation of natural environment should be based on resource conservation technologies and best management practices.

Alliance: The Inside Story of How Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill Won One War and Began Another

Jonathan Fenby, "Alliance: The Inside Story of How Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill Won One War and Began Another"
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Ltd | 2007 | ISBN: 0743259262 | PDF | 480 pages | 17.1 MB

The history of the Second World War is usually told through its decisive battles and campaigns. But behind the front lines, behind even the command centres of Allied generals and military planners, a different level of strategic thinking was going on. Throughout the war the 'Big Three' - Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin - met in various permutations and locations to thrash out ways to defeat Nazi Germany - and, just as importantly, to decide the way Europe would look after the war. This was the political rather than military struggle: a battle of wills and diplomacy between three men with vastly differing backgrounds, characters - and agendas. Focusing on the riveting interplay between these three extraordinary personalities, Jonathan Fenby re-creates the major Allied conferences including Casablanca, Potsdam and Yalta to show exactly who bullied whom, who was really in control, and how the key decisions were taken. With his customary flair for narrative, character and telling detail, Fenby's account reveals what really went on in those smoke-filled rooms and shows how "jaw-jaw" as well as "war-war" led to Hitler's defeat and the shape of the post-war world.

The Times Education Series GCSE Chemistry

The Times Education Series GCSE Chemistry by The Times
Platform: Windows NT / 98 / 2000 / Me / 95 | 3 July 2003 | ASIN: B00005B4PK | ISO | Language: English | 673 MB

Written by practising teachers, The Times Education Series GCSE Chemistry is an interactive CD-ROM designed to be both a study aid during the two-year course and a revision top-up when you're preparing for the actual exam.

It's divided into six chapters and covers Basic Chemistry, the Atomic Model, Uses of Chemistry, Chemical Reactions, Measurements, along with Chemistry and the Earth. Within each chapter you'll find various sub-topics covering the key items in the syllabus including elements compounds and mixtures, gas laws, atomic structure, allotropes, acids and alkalis, the Periodic Table, rates of reaction, titrations, changes to the atmosphere and geological changes.

What distinguishes this from a printed text book however, is the level of interactivity, especially in the Experiments section where you'll find nine "virtual" experiments you can do on the computer without having to prepare all the equipment and clean up afterwards. These include flame and gas tests, evaporation and dissolving, combustion, determining empirical formulas, how temperature affects the rate of reaction and the principle and effect of concentrations. It's very like the real thing. In the flame tests, for example, you'll see eight 3-D bottles on the screen. Pick one and you'll then watch as it's introduced into a Bunsen burner flame--your job is to note the result and then name both the element and its chemical symbol. If you get stuck, you can click the Help button for context sensitive hints and tips.

Elsewhere the Tests & Achievement section quizzes you on the contents of the course, though rightly points out that the results--which you can review at any time--shouldn't be taken as an accurate guide of how you'll do in the final exam; you're not given marks for showing working out, for example.

In all, this is an excellent product that will support a motivated student throughout the GCSE Chemistry course. The Experiments section also makes excellent use of the multimedia features of your PC. --Rob Beattie

Army of Shadows: Palestinian Collaboration with Zionism, 1917-1948

Hillel Cohen, "Army of Shadows: Palestinian Collaboration with Zionism, 1917-1948"
Publisher: University of California Press | 2009 | ISBN: 0520259890 | PDF | 352 pages | 1.1 MB

Inspired by stories he heard in the West Bank as a child, Hillel Cohen uncovers a hidden history in this extraordinary and beautifully written book--a history central to the narrative of the Israel-Palestine conflict but for the most part willfully ignored until now. In Army of Shadows, initially published in Israel to high acclaim and intense controversy, he tells the story of Arabs who, from the very beginning of the Arab-Israeli encounter, sided with the Zionists and aided them politically, economically, and in security matters. Based on newly declassified documents and research in Zionist, Arab, and British sources, Army of Shadows follows Bedouins who hosted Jewish neighbors, weapons dealers, pro-Zionist propagandists, and informers and local leaders who cooperated with the Zionists, and others to reveal an alternate history of the mandate period with repercussions extending to this day. The book illuminates the Palestinian nationalist movement, which branded these "collaborators" as traitors and persecuted them; the Zionist movement, which used them to undermine Palestinian society from within and betrayed them; and the collaborators themselves, who held an alternate view of Palestinian nationalism. Army of Shadows offers a crucial new view of history from below and raises profound questions about the roots of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Shakespeare and the Culture of Paradox

Shakespeare and the Culture of Paradox By Peter G. Platt
Publisher: A s h g a t e 2009 | 262 Pages | ISBN: 0754665518 | PDF | 3 MB

Exploring Shakespeare's intellectual interest in placing both characters and audiences in a state of uncertainty, mystery, and doubt, this book interrogates the use of paradox in Shakespeare's plays and in performance. By adopting this discourse-one in which opposites can co-exist and perspectives can be altered, and one that asks accepted opinions, beliefs, and truths to be reconsidered - Shakespeare used paradox to question love, gender, knowledge, and truth from multiple perspectives.Committed to situating literature within the larger culture, Peter Platt begins by examining the Renaissance culture of paradox in both the classical and Christian traditions. He then looks at selected plays in terms of paradox, including the geographical site of Venice in "Othello" and "The Merchant of Venice", and equity law in "The Comedy of Errors", "Merchant", and "Measure for Measure". Platt also considers the paradoxes of theater and live performance that were central to Shakespearean drama, such as the duality of the player, the boy-actor and gender, and the play/audience relationship in the "Henriad", "Hamlet", "As You Like It", "Twelfth Night", "Antony and Cleopatra", "The Winter's Tale", and "The Tempest".In showing that Shakespeare's plays create and are created by a culture of paradox, Platt offers an exciting and innovative investigation of Shakespeare's cognitive and affective power over his audience.

The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron

Publisher: C r o w n Arche type 2009 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 0307460312 | PDF + EPUB | 2 Mb + 1 MB

Coinciding with the release of Avatar, James Cameron's first film in over a decade, Time reporter Keegan's solid biography of the dynamic director sheds welcome light on his cinematic achievements. Growing up in Ontario and later Los Angeles, Cameron was an accomplished artist and budding scientist who would bring his fascination with new technology to all his films. From his days doing grunt work for Hollywood indie legend Roger Corman—including his first directing job, helming Piranha 2—Cameron pursued his artistic vision with a passion that often translated into a tyrannical on-set presence. His string of action hits in the 1980s—Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss—made him one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood, and he continued through the 1990s, culminating in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. With each film, Cameron strove for new technological feats, from shooting tricky underwater dialogue scenes in The Abyss to the reconstruction of a near life-size version of the doomed ship in Titanic. Keegan explores not only the director's achievements on film, including an in-depth look at the 3D-film Avatar but also his often tumultuous personal life (including his five marriages). Fans of the charismatic director will welcome a look behind the scenes of some of the biggest movies in the last two-plus decades.

Space is the Machine: A Configurational Theory of Architecture

Space is the Machine: A Configurational Theory of Architecture By Bill Hillier
Publisher: S p a c e S y n t a x 2007 | 368 Pages | ISBN: 0955622409 , 052164528X | PDF | 27 MB

Since The Social Logic of Space was published in 1984 Bill Hillier and his colleagues at University College London have been conducting research on how space features in the form and functioning of buildings and cities. A key outcome is the concept of 'spatial configuration' - meaning relations which take account of other relations in a complex. New techniques have been developed and applied to a wide range of architectural and urban problems. The aim of this book is to assemble some of this work and show how it leads the way to a new type of theory of architecture: an 'analytic' theory in which understanding and design advance together. The success of configurational ideas in bringing to light the spatial logic of buildings and cities suggests that it might be possible to extend these ideas to other areas of the human sciences where problems of configuration and pattern are critical.

The Skeptical Economist: Revealing the Ethics Inside Economics

The Skeptical Economist: Revealing the Ethics Inside Economics By Jonathan Aldred
Publisher: Earthscan Publications Ltd. | ISBN: 1844077055 | edition 2009 | PDF | 290 pages | 1,01 mb

The Skeptical Economist rejects the story told by other popular economics books. It shows that economics is not an agreed body of knowledge or an objective science. In reality, economics is built on ethical foundations, distinctive and controversial views about how we ought to live, and what we value. In this revealing and entertaining book, the author exposes these hidden assumptions, and in doing so opens the black box of modern economics to reveal that the conventional wisdom is not what it appears to be. Often the conventional wisdom has hoodwinked us; ordinary people sometimes understand the economy better than professional economists. In short, The Skeptical Economist rediscovers the ethics at the heart of economics. The book responds to Western malaise about quality of life, and a growing curiosity about economics and its relevance to these concerns. It is for readers who know that economics is unavoidably central to any attempt to improve our quality of life, but do not know why. It conveys a sense of hope, without being utopian. It is a book of ideas and will challenge us all to examine the assumptions behind the economics of our current way of life.

Economics of Crime (Foundations and Trends(R) in Microeconomics)

Erling Eide, Paul H. Rubin, Joanna M. Shepherd «Economics of Crime (Foundations and Trends(R) in Microeconomics)»
Publisher: Now Publishers Inc | Edition: 2006 | ISBN: 1933019484 | PDF | 92 pages | 1,22 Mb

Economics of Crime presents the basic model of criminal behavior and law enforcement. The authors start by reviewing the economics of criminal behavior. Models of criminal behavior applying the model of individual rational behavior are presented. Empirical studies surveyed use regression analyses and employ data from states and police regions down to individuals. These studies tend to support the hypothesis that the probability of punishment and the severity of punishment have a deterrent effect on crime. Methodological problems relating to the assumption of rationality, statistical identification of equations, measurement errors, and operationalization of theoretical variables are discussed. Economics of Crime also review the theory of public enforcement including probability and severity, fines and imprisonment, repeat offenders, incentives of enforcers, enforcement costs and enforcement errors. Economics of Crime is intended for economists and lawyers, practitioners, scholars and students in the field of law and economics, microeconomics, and criminology who wish to learn the basics of the economics of crime, criminal behavior, and law enforcement.

Ecological Economics: Principles And Applications

Herman E. Daly, Joshua Farley "Ecological Economics: Principles And Applications"
Island Press | English | 2003-11-01 | ISBN: 1559633123 | 488 pages | PDF | 2,1 MB

Conventional economics is increasingly criticized for failing to reflect the value of clean air and water, species diversity, and social and generational equity. By excluding biophysical and social reality from its analyses and equations, conventional economics seems ill-suited to address problems in a world characterized by increasing human impacts and decreasing natural resources.

Ecological Economics is an introductory-level textbook for an emerging paradigm that addresses this fundamental flaw in conventional economics. The book defines a revolutionary "transdiscipline" that incorporates insights from the biological, physical, and social sciences, and it offers a pedagogically complete examination of this exciting new field. The book provides students with a foundation in traditional neoclassical economic thought, but places that foundation within a new interdisciplinary framework that embraces the linkages among economic growth, environmental degradation, and social inequity.

A Student's Guide to Economics by Paul Heyne

A Student's Guide to Economics (Isi Guides to the Major Disciplines) (Paperback) by Paul Heyne
Publisher: ISI Books (November 2000) | ISBN-10: 1882926447 | 64 pages | 256KB | PDF

If you are anything like me, you received very little economics education in school. Economics has always seemed like medieval alchemy to me, full of esoteric knowledge and arcana, obviously important for someone to understand --but not required by the average American. Time has taught me that I was wrong. I still have no great desire to be conversant with the jargon of economics. But I now believe that a basic understanding of economic theories should be mandatory for all citizens. Otherwise it is impossible to evaluate the policies of our politicians. To tax-cut or not to tax-cut---can I evaluate tax policy and determine potential impacts,
or do I rely on the sound bites of politicians who want me to accept what they say at face value?
A Student’s Guide to Economics is a good starting place to delve into economics. This guide, as with others in the series, was written for those who want to pursue economics study on the college level. As such, it contains practical information for pursuing that goal. My favorite part of this little guide is Heyne’s presentation of the history of economic theory interspersed with brief biographies of major economists. It really helped me get an understanding of who the major players have been, the ideas they have promoted, and where I, as a conservative, fit into the economic spectrum.
I would recommend having a high school age student read this guide prior to pursuing further study in economics. It provides a framework which they can use for hanging in place the different elements of economics they will encounter in a traditional economics text.

Applied Evolutionary Economics and Complex Systems by John Foster

Applied Evolutionary Economics and Complex Systems by John Foster (Editor), Werner Holzl (Editor)
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing (October 4, 2004) | ISBN-10: 1843763699 | PDF | 1,4 Mb | 304 pages

Foster (economics, University of Queensland, Australia) and Holzl (economics, Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, Austria) develop an empirically based foundation for evolutionary economics built on complex systems theory. Arguing that modern evolutionary economics is at a crossroads on both the theoretical and applied levels, they examine aspects of complexity and evolution in applied contexts, looking at topics including innovation and technology in industry, industry life cycle times, and the relationship between ecological and evolutionary economics. The book will appeal to economists and scholars of innovation studies, as well as management scientists and policymakers.

Economics as a Social Science: An Approach to Nonautistic Theory

Economics as a Social Science: An Approach to Nonautistic Theory
Publisher: University of Michigan Press | ISBN: 0472112430 | edition 2002 | PDF | 232 pages | 1,1 mb

Economics as a Social Science is a highly readable critique of economic theory, based on a wide range of research, that endeavors to restore economics to its proper role as a social science. Contrary to conventional economic theory, which assumes that people have no free will, this book instead bases economics on the realistic assumption that human beings can choose; that we are complex beings affected by emotion, custom, habit, and reason; and that our behavior varies with circumstances and times. It embraces the findings of history, psychology, and other social sciences and the insights from great literature on human behavior as opposed to the rigidity set by mathematical axioms that define how economics is understood and practiced today.
Andrew M. Kamarck demonstrates that only rough accuracy is attainable in economic measurement, and that understanding an economy requires knowledge from other disciplines. The canonical hypotheses of economics (perfect rationality, self-interest, equilibrium) are shown to be inadequate (and in the case of "equilibrium" to be counterproductive to understanding the forces that dominate the economy), and more satisfactory assumptions provided. The market is shown to work imperfectly and to require appropriate institutions to perform its function reasonably well. Further, Kamarck argues that self-interest does not always lead to helping the general interest.
Economics as a Social Science examines and revises the fundamental assumptions of economics. Because it avoids jargon and explains terms carefully, it will be of interest to economics majors as well as to graduate students of economics and other social sciences, and social scientists working in government and the private sector.
Andrew M. Kamarck is former Director, Economic Development Institute, the World Bank.

Inframarginal Economics

Xiaokai Yang, Wai-Man Liu "Inframarginal Economics"
World Scientific Publishing Company | English | 2008-12-22 | ISBN: 9812389288 | 924 pages | PDF | 7,7 MB

This research monograph provides systematic and comprehensive materials for applying inframarginal analysis to study a wide range of economic phenomena. The analysis is based on a new overarching framework to resurrect the classical notion of division of labor and specialization, which is an essential source of increasing a nation s wealth. The framework absorbs many classical and neo-classical insights in a general equilibrium analysis and explains many micro- and macro-phenomena. Many areas of the discipline that have been customarily treated as separate branches can now be analyzed systematically within this integrated framework. These include, for example, micro-economics; macro-economics; development economics; international economics; urban economics; growth theory; industrial organization; applications of game theory in economics; economics of property rights; economics of transaction costs; economics of institutions and contract; economics of organization; economics of states; managerial economics; theory of hierarchy; new theory of the firm; theory of money; theory of insurance; theory of network and reliability.

Contents: Consumer-Producer's Decisions to Choose the Optimum Level and Pattern of Specialization; More General Smithian Models; The Labor Market and the Institution of the Firm; Endogenous Transaction Costs and Theory of Contract, Ownership, and Residual Rights; Exogenous Comparative Advantages in Technology and Endowment, Division of Labor, and Trade; Urbanization, Dual Structure Between Urban and Rural Areas, and the Division of Labor; Economics of Property Rights and Insurance and Risk of Coordination Failure of the Netwok of Division of Labor; Industrialization and the Division of Labor in Roundabout Production; Economic Growth Generated by Endogenous Evolution in Division of Labor; Experiments with Structures of Division of Labor and Evolution in Organization Information Acquired by Society; and other papers.

Economics for Everyone: A Short Guide to the Economics of Capitalism by Jim Stanford

Economics for Everyone: A Short Guide to the Economics of Capitalism by Jim Stanford
Publisher: Pluto Press; 1 edition (May 20, 2008) | ISBN: 0745327516 | Pages: 360 | PDF | 2 MB

Most people think economics is a technical, confusing, and even mysterious subject. It’s a fi eld best left to the experts: namely, the economists. But in reality, economics should be quite straightforward. After all, economics is simply about how we work. What we produce. And how we distribute and ultimately use what we’ve produced. Economics is about who does what, who gets what, and what they do with it. At that simplest, grass-roots level, we all know something about the economy. And so we should all have something to say about economics. Moreover, because we interact, cooperate, and clash with each other in the economy (even Robinson Crusoe didn’t work alone – he had Friday around to help), economics is a social subject. It’s not just technical, concrete forces like technology and productivity that matter. It’s also the interactions and relationships between people that make the economy go around.

Reorienting Economics

Tony Lawson, "Reorienting Economics"
MgH | 2009 | ISBN: 0415253357, 0415253365 | 383 pages | PDF | 10,1 MB

This eagerly anticipated new book from Tony Lawson contends that economics can profit from a more explicit concern with ontology (enquiry into the nature of existence) than has been its custom. By admitting that economics is not exactly a picture of health at the moment, Lawson hopes that we can move away from the bafflingly intransigent belief that economics is at its core reliant upon mathematical modelling. This maths-envy is the reason why economics is in a state of such disarray.

In this wide ranging, thought provoking, book Tony Lawson further advances the basic thesis of his much acclaimed Economics and Reality that social theorising, in particular economics, needs to give more explicit and systematic attention than hitherto to considering the nature of its subject matter. Formally put, the author continues his call for an ontological turn in social theorising. Tony Lawson finds the discipline of economics to be in a non too-healthy condition, and demonstrates that the problems arise largely because of a widespread tendency of economists to make stipulations on method independently of considerations of context or conditions of analysis. In addressing this situation the author argues for a radical reorientation of the discipline allowing a more pluralistic forum, one that is accommodating of ontology and critical thinking amongst much else. The emphasis on pluralism is basic to Lawson's argument. Far from being a polemic against the currently dominant set of economic practices, Lawson sustains the thesis that if economics is to be saved from itself it is highly desirable to seek, where feasible, a continual dialogue between all interested parties. The coverage of Reorienting Economics includes commentaries on the current state of economics, the nature of ontological theorising (including the nature of its consequences), possibilities for social explanation, the scope of economics, evolutionary thinking, the contribution of heterodox traditions including feminist economics, post Keynesianism and old institutionalism, the historical process whereby economics came to take its current orientation, and much else. As with Lawson's previous writings, Reorienting Economics will be of interest not only to economists but also to philosophers, the variety of social theorists, and indeed anyone interested in understanding the current state of social theorising and contemplating how it might be improved.

Tony Lawson is a member of the Faculty of Economics and Politics at the University of Cambridge, UK.

New Institutional Economics: A Guidebook

Éric Brousseau, Jean-Michel Glachant, "New Institutional Economics: A Guidebook"
C--dge University Press | 2008 | ISBN: 0521700167 | 608 pages | PDF | 2 MB

Institutions frame behaviors and exchanges in markets, business networks, communities, and organizations throughout the world. Thanks to the pioneering work of Ronald Coase, Douglas North and Olivier Williamson, institutions are now recognized as being a key factor in explaining differences in performance between industries, nations, and regions. The fast-growing field of new institutional economics analyzes the economics of institutions and organizations using methodologies, concepts, and analytical tools from a wide range of disciplines (including political science, anthropology, sociology, management, law, and economics). With contributions from an international team of researchers, New Institutional Economics provides theoreticians, practitioners, and advanced students in economics and social sciences with a guide to the many recent developments in the field. It explains the underlying methodologies, identifies issues and questions for future research, and shows how results apply to decision making in law, economic policy, management, regulation and institutional design.

We are all economists—when we work, buy, save, invest, pay taxes, and vote. It repays us many times over to be good economists. Economic issues are active in our lives every day. Eric D. Beinhocker, "The Origin of Wealth: Evolution, Complexity, and the Radical Remaking of Economics"

Eric D. Beinhocker, "The Origin of Wealth: Evolution, Complexity, and the Radical Remaking of Economics"
Harvard Business School Press | 2006 | ISBN: 157851777X | 543 pages | siPDF | 11.2 MB

Over 6.4 billion people participate in a $36.5 trillion global economy, designed and overseen by no one. How did this marvel of self-organized complexity evolve? How is wealth created within this system? And how can wealth be increased for the benefit of individuals, businesses, and society?

In The Origin of Wealth, Eric D. Beinhocker argues that modern science provides a radical perspective on these age-old questions, with far-reaching implications. According to Beinhocker, wealth creation is the product of a simple but profoundly powerful evolutionary formula: differentiate, select, and amplify. In this view, the economy is a "complex adaptive system" in which physical technologies, social technologies, and business designs continuously interact to create novel products, new ideas, and increasing wealth.
