    Targeted Cancer Immune Therapy (2009)

    Targeted Cancer Immune Therapy
Publisher: Springer Language: English ISBN:1441901698 343 pages Data: 2009 PDF 3 Mb

    Description:
The principle of cancer immune therapy remains the stimulation of the immune system to control and destroy tumors, but the scope is expanded in steady and fast pace, the approach is modernized every few years, new molecules are revealed annually, and the understanding of the mechanisms is getting deeper and deeper.

Targeted Cancer Immune Therapy covers cytokine immune therapy, cell-based immune therapy, and targeted immune therapy. In each of these three sections, only the novel aspects of immune therapy were selectively described instead of attempting to cover any historical achievement. In the first section, Cytokine Immune Therapy, the IL12 family, IL18, IL21, IL24, IL28, and IL29 were heavily discussed in regard to the anti-tumor function and application in treating tumors. In the second section, Cell-based Immune Therapy, the focus was given to engineering potent immune regulatory or effector cells such as dendritic cells, T cells, and stem cells. The cell engineering design is primarily based on the increased understanding of the interaction of tumor antigen presenting cells, antigen specific effector cells, and the tumor microenvironment. In the third section, Targeted Immune Therapy, the focus was given on rearticulating the antibody therapy for boosting immune response, which includes immunocytokines, "T-body", and tumor targeted CpG ODN. Immunocytokines represent a new class of biopharmaceuticals composed of two well known immune components – antibodies and cytokines – with the unique ability to target cytokines to the tumor microenvironment and thereby activate antitumor responses. Some or all of these innovative approaches may ultimately become the future effective immune therapy for treating malignancy.

    Description

When I began thinking about this book, I was guided by the wish to solve a dilemma. After 10 years of carefully conducted ethnopharmacological research, I could not help but conclude that the hundreds of molecules of clinical value awaiting discovery in the Pacific Rim might never be discovered while the global prevalence of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and microbial infections continued to grow. One possible reason for the slow rate of discovery of drugs from plants is the fact that there are a few researchers who master and rationally interconnect botany, pharmacology, traditional medicines, pharmacy, and modern medicine. One can perhaps envision the creation of a new discipline of science which would encompass all these disciplines.

Nuclear Structure and Gene Expression: Nuclear Matrix and Chromatin Structure

Nuclear Structure and Gene Expression: Nuclear Matrix and Chromatin Structure
    Academic Press | December 2, 1996 | ISBN-10: 0121001601 | 304 pages | PDF | 22.17 mb

Nuclear Structure and Gene Expression assimilates the contributions of genome organization and of the components of the nuclear matrix to the control of DNA and RNA synthesis. Nuclear domains which accommodate DNA replication and gene expression are considered in relation to short-term developmental and homeostatic requirements as well as to long-term commitments to phenotypic gene expression in differentiated cells. Consideration is given to the involvement of nuclear structure in gene localization as well as to the targeting and concentration of transcription factors. Aberrations in nuclear architecture associated with and potentially functionally related to pathologies are evaluated. Tumor cells are described from the perspective of the striking modifications in both the composition and organization of nuclear components. Nuclear Structure and Gene Expression presents concepts as well as experimental approaches, which define functionality of nuclear morphology.

Kathtyn Kelley - Issues, Theory, and Research in Industrial / Organizational Psychology

Kathtyn Kelley - Issues, Theory, and Research in Industrial / Organizational Psychology
    Publisher: Elsevier BV | 1992-03-01 | ISBN: 0444887776 | PDF | 478 pages | 56.37 MB

Industrial/Organizational psychologists are a rather diverse group of people with a common interest in applying psychology to work settings. This is the conclusion reached by George Alliger in the opening chapter of this volume, setting the tone for the rest of the book, which attempts to expand our view of what can be considered as I/O psychology.
The authors of the individual chapters are from a variety of backgrounds, not all of them directly associated with I/O psychology, and they discuss topics such as managerial success and training, as well as topics much more on the edge of I/O such as team-building and organizational theory. Thus, this volume makes an important statement about the potential diversity of our field. At the same time, it will help move us towards that diversity by providing insights and information in areas that should be, and are becoming part of the realm of I/O psychology. These insights into non-traditional topics.

The Psychology of Perspective and Renaissance Art

The Psychology of Perspective and Renaissance Art
    Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521368499 | edition 1988 | PDF | 208 pages | 10 mb

Michael Kubovy, an experimental psychologist, recounts the lively history of the invention of perspective in the fifteenth century, and shows how, as soon as the invention spread, it was used to achieve subtle and fascinating aesthetic effects. A clear presentation of the fundamental concepts of perspective and the reasons for its effectiveness, drawing on the latest laboratory research on how people perceive, leads into the development of a new theory to explain why Renaissance artists such as Leonardo and Mantegna used perspective in unorthodox ways which have puzzled art scholars. This theory illuminates the author's broader consideration of the evolution of art: the book proposes a resolution of the debate between those who believe that the invention/discovery of perspective is a stage in the steady progress of art and those who believe that perspective is merely a conventional and arbitrary system for the representation of space.

Arthur G. Miller - The Social Psychology of Good and Evil

Arthur G. Miller - The Social Psychology of Good and Evil
    The Guilford Press | 2004 | ISBN: 157230989X | Pages: 498 | PDF | 1.55 MB

This compelling work brings together an array of distinguished scholars to explore key concepts, theories, and findings pertaining to some of the most fundamental issues in social life: the conditions under which people are kind and helpful to others or, conversely, under which they commit harmful, even murderous acts. Covered are such topics as the complex interaction of individual, societal, and situational factors underpinning good or evil behavior; the role of guilt and the self-concept; and issues of responsibility and motivation, including why good people do bad things. The volume also examines whether aggression and violence are inescapable aspects of human nature, and how cooperative interaction can break down stereotyping and discrimination.

Tamar E. Chansky - Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking

Tamar E. Chansky - Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking:
Powerful, Practical Strategies to Build a Lifetime of Resilience, Flexibility, and Happiness
    Da Capo Lifelong Books | 2008 | ISBN: 0738211850 | Pages: 336 | PDF | 1.12 MB

Powerful, practical strategies to build a lifetime of resilience, flexibility, and happiness.

Several years ago Dr. Tamar Chansky, one of the nation’s leading clinical experts on children and anxiety disorders, realized that roughly half of the children she sees in her clinical practice exhibit “negative thinking.” These children see only those things that are wrong with themselves, the world, and the future. Distinct from the type of thinking Dr. Chansky encountered in children with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, children who engage in negative thinking supersize their problems: Nothing ever works for me. There’s no point. I give up. This negativity creates emotional hurdles that often hinder children from achieving success and happiness, both now and in the years to come.

Now in this landmark book, Dr. Chansky thoroughly analyzes the underlying causes of children’s negative attitudes and provides numerous strategies to help parents and their children manage negative thoughts, build optimism, and establish emotional resilience. She shows how to buffer kids from disappointment, failure, and frustration by helping them to think more accurately about their problems—to right-size them.

Freeing your Child from Negative Thinking provides parents, caregivers, and clinicians with the tools they need to relieve a child from the burden of these emotional hurdles and to build the positive, confident mindset that will set them on their way to a bright, happy future.

    The Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology

David Matsumoto, "The Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology"
    Cambridge University Press | 2009 | ISBN: 0521671000, 0521854709 | 608 pages | PDF | 5,6 MB

The Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology is the first and only dictionary that surveys the broad discipline of psychology from an international, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary focus. This focus was achieved in several ways. The managing and consulting editor boards were comprised of world-renowned scholars in psychology from many different countries, not just the United States. They reviewed and edited all of the keyword entries to make them lively and applicable across cultural contexts, incorporating the latest knowledge in contemporary international psychology. Thus entries related to culture, as well as those from all domains of psychology, are written with the broadest possible audience in mind. Also, many keywords central to contemporary psychology were incorporated that are not included in many competitors, including the Oxford and APA dictionaries.
