Those Years Without

Those Years Without
by James Welsh
We find ourselves in northern England during the medieval ages. Peter de Vere a young noble who deserted the crusader army while in Africa makes his way back home to find that he doesnt have a home any longer. His father dead and his mother having no legal rights, the family castle is snatched up by the tyrannical King Humphrey. Peter manages to put the castle back under his familys good name, but he faces a heavy cost: incurring the wrath of the fierce English army, which is led by the brilliant general Benedict Marshall. Armed with just a band of ragtag rebels and his childhood friends Milo and Isabella the defiant Peter must do all he can to prove that these are not the dark times that everyone thinks they are. As Peter dives into the fight, however, he finds that loyalty is a fluid idea and that treachery abounds everywhere. He has to keep his direction while everyone around him becomes lost.

Hitler-Youth, 1922 1945.

Jean-Denis G. G. Lepage, "Hitler-Youth, 1922 1945".
Publisher: McFarland | ISBN: 0786439351 | 2008 edition | PDF | 183 Pages | 6,25 MB

During the Nazi regime's swift rise to power, no single target of nazification took higher priority than Germany's young people. Well aware that the Nazi party could only thrive through the support of future generations, Hitler instituted a youth movement, the Hitler Jugend, which indoctrinated the easily malleable students of Germany's schools and universities. Along with its female counterpart in the Bund Deutscher MA¤del (The League of German Girls), the Hitler Youth produced thousands of young Germans who were deeply and fanatically indoctrinated into the Nazi racist ideology. This illustrated book outlines the history and development of the Hitler Youth from its origins in 1922 until it was disbanded by the allied powers in 1945. Topics include: early German non-Nazi and religious youth movements which were adapted and absorbed by the Hitler Youth; Baldur von Schirach and other Reich youth leaders; the Hitler Youth's organization, structure, uniforms, ranking system, flags, and regalia; sports and other common training activities; the place and role of women and girls in the Third Reich; the appearance of German youth opposition groups such as the Swing Youth and the Edelweiss Pirates; and the origins, structure, and combat records of the 12th Waffen SS division, which consisted primarily of Hitler Youth members. The book also includes appendices providing a chronology and the Hitler Youth's song "VorwA¤rts! VorwA¤rts!" (Forward! Forward!).

Hitler's Crusade: Bolshevism and the Myth of the International Jewish Conspiracy

Lorna Waddington, "Hitler's Crusade: Bolshevism and the Myth of the International Jewish Conspiracy"
Publisher: Tauris Academic Studies | 2008 | ISBN 1845115562 | PDF | 305 pages | 11 MB

In the early hours of 22 June 1941 units of the Wehrmacht began to pour into the Soviet Union. They were embarking on an undertaking long planned by Adolf Hitler. Since the 1920s National Socialist doctrine had largely been determined by an intense hatred and hostility towards not only the Jews but also towards Bolshevism. This ideology, Lorna Waddington argues, had been identified by Hitler and his acolytes as the political poison concocted by the Jews in an attempt to impose, as he saw it, their own tyrannical domination across the globe. ‘Hitler’s Crusade’ provides a detailed analysis of this crucial dimension to Hitler’s Weltanschauung, exploring the little-known activities of the Antikomintern, as well as offering fresh interpretations and new insights on well-documented events. ‘Hitler’s Crusade’ provides the definitive analysis of Hitler’s attitude towards Bolshevism, the destruction of which he was still describing in early 1945 as the raison d’ĂȘtre of the Nazi movement.

Corporal Hitler and the Great War 1914-1918: The List Regiment

Corporal Hitler and the Great War 1914-1918: The List Regiment (Cass Military Studies) By John Williams
Publisher: Frank Cass 2005 | 238 Pages | ISBN: 0415358558 | PDF | 1 MB

Adolf Hitler enlisted in the Bavarian Army in August 1914 as a war volunteer. Fanatically devoted to the German cause between 1914 and 1918 Hitler served with distinction and sometimes reckless bravery, winning both classes of Iron Cross. Using memoirs, military records, regimental, divisional and official war histories as well as (wherever possible) Hitler's own words, this book seeks to reconstruct a period in his life that has been neglected in the literature. It is also the story of a German regiment (16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry, or List Regiment), which fought in all the main battles on the Western Front. As a frontline soldier Hitler began his 'study' of the black art of propaganda; and, as he himself maintained, the List Regiment provided him with his 'university of life'.

This is not only an account of the fighting, however. Some of the most profound influences on Hitler occurred on home leave or as a result of official wartime propaganda, which he devoured uncritically. His conversion from passive pathological anti-Semitism began while invalided in Germany in 1916-17. The language of anti-Bolshevik 'Jewish virus' propaganda became Hitler's language, confirmed, as he saw it, by the 'infected' recruits to the List Regiment in 1918.

Hitler is here presented less as the product of high-cultural forces than as an avid reader and gullible consumer of state propaganda, which fed his prejudices. He was a 'good soldier' but also a 'true believer' in fact and practice. It is no exaggeration to say that every military decision made by Hitler between 1939 and 1945 was in some way influenced or colored by his experiences with the List Regiment between 1914 and 1918.

Hitler's Table Talk

Adolf Hitler, Norman Cameron, R. H. Stevens, Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper "Hitler's Table Talk"
Enigma Books | 2000-10-01 | ISBN: 1929631057 | 800 pages | PDF | 6,1 MB

Hitler's Table Talk 1941-1944 records the private, off the record, informal conversations of a man who, more than anyone else, came close to destroying the western world. On Martin Bormann's instructions, the secret conversations at Hitler's headquarters from July 1941 to November 1944 were all recorded. This is the real companion volume to Hitler's Mein Kampf, whereby what had been a project suddenly was reality, almost to the disbelief of its author.
Here is a startling account of Hitler freely talking about his enemies, his friends, his ambitions, his failures, his secret dreams voicing his thoughts to his intimate associates as the sun set at the end of each day of the war. We see here a conversational Hitler letting down his guard to his trusted henchmen. Miraculously, Martin Bormann persuaded Hitler to let these talks be taken down by a team of specially picked shorthand writers. Hitler had intended, after his famous tyranny, to use these notes as source material for the books he planned to write about the glory of the Thousand-Year Reich.
Now they have come to us, indisputably authentic, a raw, fascinating, unretouched look at the inner recesses of the mind of Adolf Hitler. Der Fuhrer's mind was crude and narrow; he had little education and, as we see here, no humanity; but we can also see that he was (as he himself knew) a political genius, a terrible simplifier, a man who, with no equipment except his own will power, personality and ideas, attempted to bring mankind into a terrible darkness.
As Trevor-Roper says in his brilliant introduction if we are to discover the mind of Hitler, we must penetrate behind the thick curtains of superficial evidence which conceal it the repellant character which formed its expression, and for which no power of thought can compensate, and the unreliable intermediaries who have commented upon it. We must go directly to Hitler's personal utterances: not indeed to his letters and speeches these, so valuable, are too public, too formalized for such purposes to his secret conversations, his table talk.

Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime

Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime by Aubrey de Grey
St. Martin's Press | English | 2007| ISBN: 0312367066 | 400 pages | PDF | 5 MB
MUST WE AGE?

A long life in a healthy, vigorous, youthful body has always been one of humanity’s greatest dreams. Recent progress in genetic manipulations and calorie-restricted diets in laboratory animals hold forth the promise that someday science will enable us to exert total control over our own biological aging.

Nearly all scientists who study the biology of aging agree that we will someday be able to substantially slow down the aging process, extending our productive, youthful lives. Dr. Aubrey de Grey is perhaps the most bullish of all such researchers. As has been reported in media outlets ranging from 60 Minutes to The New York Times, Dr. de Grey believes that the key biomedical technology required to eliminate aging-derived debilitation and death entirely—technology that would not only slow but periodically reverse age-related physiological decay, leaving us biologically young into an indefinite future—is now within reach.

In Ending Aging, Dr. de Grey and his research assistant Michael Rae describe the details of this biotechnology. They explain that the aging of the human body, just like the aging of man-made machines, results from an accumulation of various types of damage. As with man-made machines, this damage can periodically be repaired, leading to indefinite extension of the machine’s fully functional lifetime, just as is routinely done with classic cars. We already know what types of damage accumulate in the human body, and we are moving rapidly toward the comprehensive development of technologies to remove that damage. By demystifying aging and its postponement for the nonspecialist reader, de Grey and Rae systematically dismantle the fatalist presumption that aging will forever defeat the efforts of medical science.

Roman Blood: A Novel of Ancient Rome

Publisher: Minotaur Books (April 15, 2008)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 031238324X
ISBN-13: 978-0312383244

I first began reading Steven Saylor's short stories in Ellery Queen and was immediately taken with his writing. Saylor brings history to life in an immediate and vivid manner. He does it so well, the reader doesn't notice it after awhile. "Roman Blood" is first and foremost a mystery, and the "detective" is Gordinius the Finder, a Roman citizen who is often hired to find truth. In this story a man is accused of murdering his father, and faces a horrible punishment if Gordinius and Cicero cannot find him innocent. Saylor exposes the corruption of the Roman political system while asking pointed questions about what justice is. This novel is so far my favorite of Saylor's novels because although he delves into the politics of the Roman Forum, the book is foremost a mystery novel. Gordinius is attempting to solve the murder of a Roman citizen, and Saylor maintains the suspensefulness throughout the novel. The book's ending leaves the readers surprised and thoughtful. Saylor also, by the end of the book, has ensured his future royalties because he's made you care about the characters and leaves you wanting to read more about their lives and their challenges.

Description

Human genetics provides a theoretical framework for understanding the biology of the human species. It is a rapidly growing branch of science. New insights into the biochemical basis of heredity and the development of human cytogenetics in the 1950s heightened interest in this fi eld. The number of research workers and clinicians who defi ne themselves as full-time or part-time human and medical geneticists has increased sharply, and detailed well-founded knowledge has augmented exponentially. Many scientists and physicians are confronted with genetic problems and use concepts and methodology ofhuman genetics in research and diagnosis. Methods developed in many different fi elds of the biologic, chemical, medical, and statistical sciences are being utilized toward the solution of genetic problems. The increasing number and sophistication of well-defi ned and elegantly solved problems helps to refi ne an extensive framework of genetic theory. These new conceptual insights in their turn lead to solutions of new questions. To mention only one example, the structure of hemoglobin genes has been elucidated using methods derived from protein chemistry and DNA technology. It is an exciting experience to participate in these developments!
