Crohn's Disease: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Roberto Tersigni, Cosimo Prantera "Crohn's Disease: A Multidisciplinary Approach"
Sp in er | 2009 | ISBN: 8847014719 | 304 pages | PDF | 6,7 MB

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, whose symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis; it can therefore be difficult to diagnose. Its knowledge and understanding have increased considerably in the last years; new advances in genetics, medical and surgical management offer today new possibilities for patients suffering from an inflammatory bowel disease. However, Crohn's disease remains a difficult disease to deal with, both from a research and clinical point of view.

This book provides general practitioners with a basic knowledge of the disease, offering in the same time an update on new facts about Crohn's disease to specialists. It can also be useful for residents willing to develop a deeper knowledge of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Encyclopedia of Global Warming and Climate Change (3 Volume Set)

S. George Philander - Encyclopedia of Global Warming and Climate Change (3 Volume Set)
Publisher: Sаge Publicаtions | 2008-04-22 | ISBN: 1412958784 | PDF | 1552 pages | 30.86 MB

A useful reader's guide and a colorful 16-page introduction precede this encyclopedia's 750 articles. Volume 1 also offers a chronology that covers the subject from 4.5 billion years ago to 2007 and notes contributors and their affiliations. However, many of them are listed as "independent scholars" and their affiliation or expertise is unclear. An alphabetical list of the set's entries appears in each volume. The articles cover a variety of topics relating to global warming and climate change such as social effects and scientific causes. Entries on individual countries and key figures are also included. While the articles are full of useful information, the writing is not always clear and there are grammar issues throughout that make for choppy reading. In addition, some of the content is most appropriate for AP students. The layout is basic, featuring double columns of text on each page, with a few black-and-white stock photographs scattered throughout. Entries conclude with "see also" references, which are not always thorough, and a bibliography. The appendix presents charts and tables of relevant data ("Ice Age Temperature Changes," "Recent Sea Level Rise"), and each volume concludes with a comprehensive index.

March 1934. But joy turns to horror when her arrival coincides with the murder of a young woman she had befriended on the train ride—and Tey is plunged into a mystery as puzzling as any in her own works.

Detective Inspector Archie Penrose is convinced that the killing is connected to the play, and that Tey herself is in danger of becoming a victim of her own success. In the aftermath of a second murder, the writer and the policeman must join together to stop a ruthless killer who will apparently stop at nothing.

"Enemies of Intelligence: Knowledge and Power in American National Security"

Richard K. Betts, "Enemies of Intelligence: Knowledge and Power in American National Security"
Publisher: Columbia University Press | ISBN: 0231138881 | edition 2007 | PDF | 265 pages | 1,25 mb

The tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the false assessment of Saddam Hussein's weapons arsenal were terrible reminders that good information is essential to national security. These failures convinced the American public that their intelligence system was broken and prompted a radical reorganization of agencies and personnel, but as Richard K. Betts argues in this book, critics and politicians have severely underestimated the obstacles to true reform.
One of the nation's foremost political scientists, Betts draws on three decades of work within the U.S. intelligence community to illuminate the paradoxes and problems that frustrate the intelligence process. Unlike America's efforts to improve its defenses against natural disasters, strengthening its strategic assessment capabilities means outwitting crafty enemies who operate beyond U.S. borders. It also requires looking within to the organizational and political dynamics of collecting information and determining its implications for policy.
Combining academic research with personal experience, Betts outlines strategies for better intelligence gathering and assessment. He describes how fixing one malfunction can create another; in what ways expertise can be both a vital tool and a source of error and misjudgment; the pitfalls of always striving for accuracy in intelligence, which in some cases can render it worthless; the danger, though unavoidable, of "politicizing" intelligence; and the issue of secrecy& mdash;when it is excessive, when it is insufficient, and how limiting privacy can in fact protect civil liberties.

The Body Multiple: Ontology in Medical Practice (Science and Cultural Theory)

The Body Multiple: Ontology in Medical Practice (Science and Cultural Theory) by Annemarie Mol
Duke University Press Books | 2002 | ISBN: 0822329174 | English | 216 pages | PDF | 10.35 MB

The Body Multiple is an extraordinary ethnography of an ordinary disease. Drawing on fieldwork in a Dutch university hospital, Annemarie Mol looks at the day-to-day diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerosis. A patient information leaflet might describe atherosclerosis as the gradual obstruction of the arteries, but in hospital practice this one medical condition appears to be many other things. From one moment, place, apparatus, specialty, or treatment, to the next, a slightly different “atherosclerosis” is being discussed, measured, observed, or stripped away. This multiplicity does not imply fragmentation; instead, the disease is made to cohere through a range of tactics including transporting forms and files, making images, holding case conferences, and conducting doctor-patient conversations.

The Body Multiple juxtaposes two distinct texts. Alongside Mol’s analysis of her ethnographic material—interviews with doctors and patients and observations of medical examinations, consultations, and operations—runs a parallel text in which she reflects on the relevant literature. Mol draws on medical anthropology, sociology, feminist theory, philosophy, and science and technology studies to reframe such issues as the disease-illness distinction, subject-object relations, boundaries, difference, situatedness, and ontology. In dialogue with one another, Mol’s two texts meditate on the multiplicity of reality-in-practice.

Presenting philosophical reflections on the body and medical practice through vivid storytelling, The Body Multiplewill be important to those in medical anthropology, philosophy, and the social study of science, technology, and medicine.

Koestler’s idea is clear and simple: in observing the Universe surrounding us (at the physical and biological level and in the real or formal sense) we must take into account the whole/part relationship between observed “entities”. In other words, we must not only consider atoms, molecules, cells, individuals, systems, words or concepts as autonomous and independent units, but we must always be aware that each of these units is at the same time a whole – composed of smaller parts – and part of a larger whole. In fact, they are holons.

Barfleur, 1120. Sabin FitzSimon, bastard son of an earl, has acquired a reputation for wildness and trouble only matched by his abilities as a warrior. But when he is caught seducing the King's favorite mistress, not even his fighting skills can save him. Beaten by the King's soldieries and left behind in the Norman port, it seems that his notoriety has finally gotten the better of him.

Upon his eventual return to England, Sabin is given the opportunity to rebuild his career and salvage his reputation: The knight Edmund Strongfist is leaving for the Holy Land to offer his sword and services to the King of Jerusalem, and he wants Sabin to join him.

Accompanying Strongfist is his young, beautiful, convent-educated daughter Annais. Sabin, he warns, is to keep away from her. Being grateful for the chance that Strongfist has given him, Sabin does so, but not without a feeling of regret as he observes her spirit and courage, and enjoys her beautiful harp playing.

The Holy Land brings its own shares of trials for Sabin. If he succeeds in keeping his distance from Annais, he has less success with Strongfist's new wife, and the consequences prove to be painful. The land is suffering from constant warfare and following the capture of the King, Sabin is forced to take command of the fortress of Montabard and marry its recently widowed chatelaine. Now there is all to play for...and all to lose.

Mechanical Assemblies: Their Design, Manufacture, and Role in Product Development

Daniel E. Whitney - Mechanical Assemblies: Their Design, Manufacture, and Role in Product Development
Publisher: Oxfоrd Univеrsity Prеss | 2004-02-19 | ISBN: 0195157826 | PDF | 544 pages | 49.53 MB

Assembly is the process by which parts become products that do useful things. It is therefore fundamental to the work of every mechanical engineer. Yet the design of assemblies and the process of assembling them are rarely taught in universities. In Mechanical Assemblies: Their Design, Manufacture, and Role in Product Development, author Daniel E. Whitney draws on more than thirty years of academic and industry experience to fill this significant gap in the mechanical engineering curriculum.
The first book to develop a systematic approach to the modeling and design of assemblies, this text addresses the subject on two levels. Assembly in the Small develops a systematic theory for the design of assemblies with their functions in mind, starting from the basic principles of mechanical constraint and including methods for representing assemblies mathematically. In addition, important assembly analysis techniques such as predicting variation and generating assembly sequences are covered using a consistent mathematical formulation. Assembly in the Large deals with the role of assemblies in product development, including product architecture, design for assembly, and manufacturing strategy, as well as design and evaluation of assembly processes and systems.
Mechanical Assemblies: Their Design, Manufacture, and Role in Product Development is ideal for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in design, production, or manufacturing systems. Engineering professionals will find a new way to view the relationship between design and manufacturing and theoretical support for their experience.

Introduction to Nonlinear Optics

Geoffrey New, "Introduction to Nonlinear Optics"
Cam bridge | 2011 | ISBN: 0521877016 | 274 pages | PDF | 2,3 MB

Since the early days of nonlinear optics in the 1960s, the field has expanded dramatically, and is now a vast and vibrant field with countless technological applications. Providing a gentle introduction to the principles of the subject, this textbook is ideal for graduate students starting their research in this exciting area. After basic ideas have been outlined, the book offers a thorough analysis of second harmonic generation and related second-order processes, before moving on to third-order effects, the nonlinear optics of short optical pulses and coherent effects such as electromagnetically-induced transparency. A simplified treatment of high harmonic generation is presented at the end. More advanced topics, such as the linear and nonlinear optics of crystals, the tensor nature of the nonlinear coefficients and their quantum mechanical representation, are confined to specialist chapters so that readers can focus on basic principles before tackling these more difficult aspects of the subject.
