Anita Shreve - Rescue: A Novel

Anita Shreve - Rescue: A Novel
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company; First Edition edition (November 30, 2010) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0316020729 | EPUB | 304 pages | 268 kb

In Shreve's smooth if unsurprising latest (after A Change in Altitude), EMT Peter Webster is drawn to a woman he rescues at the scene of a one-car drunk driving accident. Webster is well intentioned, but alcoholic Sheila, with her dangerous history, could prove beyond his efforts to save her, though the two embark on an affair that evolves into marriage and parenthood with the birth of their daughter, Rowan. Sheila's drinking, meanwhile, escalates until she causes another accident, this time with young Rowan in the car, causing Webster to send Sheila away to avoid jail time. Years later, with not a word from long-gone Sheila, Rowan is a typically turmoil-ridden high school senior--moody, her grades slipping, drinking--and her tribulations prompt Webster to reach out to Sheila to help his daughter. Webster and Sheila are more type than character--good-hearted man, damaged woman incapable of love--and the paramedic rescue scenes feel mostly like opportunities for Shreve to show off her research. Still, the story runs like a well-oiled machine and should sate the author's fans.

Biotechnology and Plant Disease Management

As agricultural production increases to meet the demands of a growing world population, so has the pace of biotechnology research to combat plant disease. Disease can be caused by a variety of complex plant pathogens including fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes, and their management
requires the use of techniques in transgenic technology, biochemistry and genetics. While texts exist on specific pathogens or management practices, a comprehensive review is needed of recent developments in modern techniques and the understanding of how pathogens cause disease.
This collection of studies discusses the key approaches to managing each group of pathogens within the context of recent developments in biotechnology. Broad themes include microbe-plant interactions, molecular diagnostics of plant pathogens and enhancing the resistance of plants.

Textbook of Real-Time Three Dimensional Echocardiography

Textbook of Real-Time Three Dimensional Echocardiography
Publisher: Springer | 2010 | ISBN: 1849964947 1849964955 | PDF | 198 pages | 10.6 MB

This Textbook will give the reader a detailed understanding of the use of 3D echo covering a wide range of topics; from the evolution of RT3D echo to the role of RT3D echo in drug trials, including chapters on the Principles of Transthoracic and Transesophageal Real-time 3D echocardiography. Other books in this area are more varied, less specific.
From the Back Cover
Tremendous improvements in ultrasound technology have led to development of one of the most impressive advancements in the use of ultrasound to assess cardiac morphology and function: three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE). During the last decade, 3DE has made a dramatic transition from a predominantly research tool used in few large academic medical centers to a technology available in most echocardiography laboratories, cardiac surgery operating rooms and catheterization and/or electrophysiology labs to address everyday clinical practice and guide interventional procedures. 3DE is now an established technique able to provide intuitive recognition of cardiac structures from any spatial point of view and complete information about absolute heart chamber volumes and function. In particular, 3DE has demonstrated its superiority over current echocardiographic modalities in a number of clinical applications. The Textbook of Real-Time Three Dimensional Echocardiography is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the normal anatomy of the heart as seen by this new revolutionary ultrasound technique, and focusing on the clinical value of transthoracic 3DE and on the expanding role of transesophageal 3DE in guiding and monitoring surgical and interventional procedures. For echocardiographers who already use 3DE, the more advanced applications of 3DE are presented in detail. For those looking to learn 3DE, the Editors and their contributors have provided hundreds of images and videos in an that show the added clinical value of 3D imaging of cardiac structures. This textbook is therefore written not only for cardiologists specifically involved in the imaging of patients but also for general cardiologists, since it offers a wider clinical view of normal and pathological cardiac anatomy.

Geometric Optics: Theory and Design of Astronomical Optical Systems Using Mathematica

Geometric Optics: Theory and Design of Astronomical Optical Systems Using Mathematica
Birkhäuser Boston | 2009 | ISBN: 0817648712 | 224 pages | PDF | 6,5 MB

This book—unique in the literature—provides readers with the mathematical background needed to design many of the optical combinations that are used in astronomical telescopes and cameras. The results presented in the work were obtained by using a different approach to third-order aberration theory as well as the extensive use of the software package Mathematica.

The newly presented approach to third-order aberration theory adopted is based on Fermat’s principle and the use of particular optical paths—not rays—termed stigmatic paths, allowing for easy derivation of third-order formulae. This approach enables readers to understand and handle the formulae required to design optical combinations without resorting to the much more complex Hamiltonian formalism and Seidel's relations.

Peaceful Mind: Using Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Psychology to Overcome Depression

Peaceful Mind: Using Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Psychology to Overcome Depression
1 edition (March 2004) | ISBN: 157224366X | 200 pages | DJVU | 3 MB

A concept grounded in the practice of certain forms of Buddhism, mindfulness is the conscious, uninvolved awareness of the present moment. Western psychologists have recently learned that this state of mind is particularly conducive to the accomplishment of cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT: an active mode of psychological treatment that attempts to recognize and counter negative thoughts and behaviors before they lead to debilitating symptoms like depression. As statistics confirm again and again that depression is the single most common psychological problem affecting Americans, the refinement of psychotherapy through the integration of spirituality-based techniques has generated considerable interest among psychology professionals. This approachable and easy-to-use book makes these powerful techniques available to the general public.

The book is built around a compelling series of specific, step-by-step interventions that provide readers with an understanding of the thoughts that lead to depression. They learn how to find the motivation to confront depressive feelings. By "sitting" with painful emotions and allowing them to pass, readers find that they can reduce the frequency of depressive episodes. Using meditation practices for observation and awareness, they develop the ability to recognize cognitive, physiological, and environmental triggers that can lead to aggravated periods of the disorder. When readers change how they approach their day-to-day lives—their daily activities, the choices they make, and the way they cope with life’s ups and downs—they strengthen the skills they need to move beyond depression and develop lasting peace of mind.

Discrete Mathematics (4th Edition)

Discrete Mathematics (4th Edition)
4th edition (2000) | ISBN: 0130961418 | 538 pages | DJVU | 5 MB

The distinguishing characteristic of Ross and Wright is a sound mathematical treatment that increases smoothly in sophistication. The book presents utility-grade discrete math tools so students can understand them, use them, and move on to more advanced mathematical topics. *NEW-An introductory section giving gentle, motivated warm-up questions that point out the importance of precision, examples, and abstraction as problem-solving tools. *NEW-Dependence on previous mathematical background and sophistication is reduced to give students with rusty skills a better chance at understanding the new ideas in discrete mathematics. *NEW-The chapter on elementary logic is extensively revised to place even more emphasis on logical thinking. *NEW-A revised presentation makes algorithms easier to translate into object-oriented programs. *NEW-Some long sections have been broken up. In particular, the account of Boolean algebras is substantially reworked to keep the abstract outline clear and to lead naturally to applications. *NEW-The section on big-oh notation is now in the chapter on induction where it is also closer to the algorithmic applications. *NEW-Chapters devoted to probability and algebraic structures have been eliminated, though the chapter on counting includes two sections on elementary probability. *The section on big-oh notation is now in the chapter on induction where it is also closer to the algorithmic applications *Chapters devoted to probability and algebraic structures have been eliminated, though the chapter on counting includes two sections on elementary probability *Proofs of all important results are given in the body of the text presentation itself, not as exercises, so serious students can study the proofs or keep the book as a reference *Hundreds of examples illustrate new ideas, tie abstract concepts to concrete settings, and build up to moderately complex uses of new methods

Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (April 26, 2000) | ISBN: 3540660208 | Pages: 242 | PDF | 2.2 MB

The carbon dioxide absorption and gas exchange at the sea surface, marine aerosols and their photochemistry, the oceanic carbon cycle as well as biomarkers in marine ecosystems, and related topics are of primary importance for understanding our global ecosystem. The topics addressed in this volume are all stemming from areas which have developed only in the last ten years of research or which have gone into decidedly new directions in that time. In most cases, the recent research has been driven by advances in instrumentation or by large-scale international cooperations. Thus this volume is also aiming at interdisciplinary and international cooperations in the future.

Pharmacoethics: A Problem-Based Approach (Plant Engineering Series) by David A. Gettman

Pharmacoethics: A Problem-Based Approach (Plant Engineering Series) by David A. Gettman (Repost)
Publisher: CRC Press; 1 edition (April 29, 2003) | ISBN: 1587160358 | Pages: 472 | PDF | 2.2 MB

Due to the changing nature of the practice of pharmacy, today's pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and researchers are faced with an increasing amount of ethical dilemmas. Pharmacoethics: A Problem Based Approach not only introduces the current ethical issues, it also provides decision making tools that can be applied to any ethical issue that may arise in the future. The authors have identified seven clinical and research ethical competencies that pharmacists will face in their practice: professional responsibility, patient's rights, privacy and confidentiality, truth telling, reproductive ethics, distributive justice, and research ethics. They present 18 problem-based learning cases drawn from the literature and developed around these competencies. These cases use ill-structured ethical problems to demonstrate the types of dilemmas found in modern pharmaceutical practice and help readers acquire the critical decision making and communication skills they need to deal with them. Unlike most texts that concentrate only on ethical principles and ethical decision-making, this book goes a step further. It demonstrates how to use motivational interviewing techniques to work through difficult ethical situations and attain a positive clinical, behavioral, and social outcome. Exploring issues that range from professional responsibility to patient's rights, Pharmacoethics: A Problem Based Approach provides a framework for developing the critical set of patient-related skills necessary for the practice of pharmacy.
