Alcohol, Sex and Gender in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe

A.Lynn Martin “Alcohol, Sex and Gender in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe"
Palgrave Macmillan | 2001 | ISBN: 0333922425 | 216 pages | PDF | 1 Mb

This book examines the effects of alcohol on gender relations in traditional Europe, focussing on England, France, and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods, roughly 1300 to 1700. While alcohol causes physiological changes that are scientifically verifiable, the work of anthropologists reveals that much of what passes for drinking behavior and drunken comportment varies from one society to the next. In traditional Europe, as in modern Western societies, drinking led to increased sexual activity for both men and women, and it inclined men to commit acts of violence. Despite male fears of female sexuality and despite patriarchal restraints, women still consumed alcoholic beverages, sometimes in gargantuan amounts. This widespread consumption of wine, ale, or beer illustrates the importance of alcohol in traditional Europe. Alcohol was the ubiquitous social lubricant, and alcoholic beverages formed an important part of most people's diets.

Description :

Product Description: Thermodynamics is a core part of most science and engineering curricula. However, most texts that are currently available to students still treat thermodynamics very much as it was presented in the 19th century, generally for historical rather than pedagogical reasons. Modern Thermodynamics takes a different approach, and deals with the relationship between irreversible processes and entropy. The relationship between irreversible processes and entropy is introduced early on, enabling the reader to benefit from seeing the relationship in such processes as heat conduction and chemical reactions. This text presents thermodynamics in a contemporary and exciting manner, with a wide range of applications, and many exercises and examples. Students are also encouraged to use computers through the provision of Mathematica code and Internet / WWW addresses where real data and additional information can be found.

 FEATURES

 · A truly modern approach to thermodynamics, presenting it as a science of irreversible processes whilst avoiding dividing the subject into equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

 · An extensive range of applications drawn from science and engineering, along with many real world examples, and exercises.

 · Written by two well-known authors, of whom Professor llya Prigogine was awarded the Nobel Prize for his

 research into thermodynamics.

Description :

In discussions about the 3rd edition and the microturbine it was apparent that additional information was needed on the subject of compressors, specifically the centrifugal compressor. This is primarily due to the fact that microturbine designs rely heavily on the centrifugal compressor instead of the axial compressor. The microturbine designs are, in many aspects, similar to the early flight engines. Early flight engine pioneers used the centrifugal design because tooling and manufacturing capability was not sufficiently developed to produce the axial components. The approach of the microturbine designer is to minimize cost (through use of existing hardware and higher rotor speeds). That this is accomplished is apparent when we see that microturbines utilize existing gas turbines and turbocharger components. These components are the turbo-expander and the centrifugal compressor.

First and Ten By Fran Lee

Product Description
A Carnal Reunions tale...

What Fran Jamison and Jack Gerrard have in common, you could balance on the head of a pin. And to make things worse, Jack blew his chances to hell back in High School with the BBW.

Neither goes to their 10th college reunion expecting sparks to fly, but when they collide in the airport, painful old memories quickly evaporate to make way for two people desperately needing to scratch 12-year-old itches.

Jack royally blew it when he let other people's opinions stop him from pursuing the 5'11" bombshell so many years back, and by the time he realized he was a jackass and tried to apologize, a traumatized and hurt Fran had shredded his ego in public, leaving him to lick his wounds and move on.

She thought she would hate him on sight. She didn't. She thought she could walk away. She couldn't. She certainly didn't expect to find herself making out like a madwoman on the hood of a borrowed car in the airport parking ramp. But she did expect one thing...she was not going to walk away again. Not when he was so damn good at scratching those itches...

One Magic Moment By Lynn Kurland

One Magic Moment By Lynn Kurland
John is in many ways similar to previous LK heroes. He is overprotective, tall, dark and handsome. They both fight their attraction to each other, but John is unable to resist Tess. And Tess can't help but fall in love, after all John is a dashing, de Piaget! There are some great moments of him trying to "herd" Tess, to keep her behind him to protect her. LK found some winners of word choice and phrases in this one. There are a lot of laugh out loud and sappy smile inducing sweet exchanges in OMM.

A madcap, awkward romance ensues of two sides hiding the truth from each other, when it really would help them if they'd just say what they're thinking. A few times through the story, I wanted to clunk their two heads together to just get on with it... ;-) Their love story is not an easy one but while the ultimate path is predictable, it is not so in any way to take away from the story. Once again there are some reappearances from some past favorite characters. What a smart tool this interweaving of stories is... because even if you've read the prior books, the characters reappearances make you want to enjoy theirs all over again.

One Magic Moment is a wonderful escapist read.

Seduction by Design

Seduction by Design
This a is typical SB novel. I'm still wondering who came up with the title for this novel. I've read several novels by this author, and after reading the last one, I sort of felt badly about how I'd thought her talent lacked a lot. I figured I'd just picked up the wrong novels and was off to a bad start. My first mistake here was buying another reprint. My second mistake was reading this novel from the start to the finish. After I closed the book and thought about the story, I started laughing. I'm still laughing. I can't believe I stayed with it and read the whole book in one sitting. I thought several times that sooner or later the plot will improve and the story will get better. Nope, it just didn't happen. It makes me wonder sometimes how an author can write a book like this one and expect the public to swallow it. Better yet, for a publisher to stick an author's name on a reprint and sell it. Then I'm thinking, it's a reprint from 1983 and maybe this type of novel was considered good. However, this is 2001 and no one would expect a business tycoon like Tyler Scott to behave with an employee in such a manner. To tell an employee he planned to seduce her the next day after their first meeting would lay a man wide open for legal action under the sexual harassment act. There was no leading up to a love affair. It just started out with Tyler telling her his intentions and from there it was....well...it was YUCK. I share books that I purchase with a reading buddy and I plan to give her the option about reading this book. I wouldn't recommend it to her because I wouldn't want her to get the idea I enjoyed any part of it. If she didn't already know I had it, I wouldn't tell her about it at all. With that, I think I've made my point.
